Inline Skating is an extreme sport and as such you can injure yourself while doing it. Wearing the correct protection will severely reduce the risk of injury. Anyone attending a lesson is required to wear at least wrist and knee pads and a helmet. It is always advised to wear full protection when skating for your safety especially when you are just beginning to learn to skate. If you take a lesson then in the beginner's introduction you learn how pads work and the combination of knees, elbows and wrist pads all work together to make skating safer.
You must always skate under control and not be a danger to yourself or anyone else. Learn a stopping method as soon as possible (i.e using the heel brake or T-Stopping). It's no good whizzing along at a great speed if you can't stop in a hurry! National Skate Patrol run free Stopping Clinics in Hyde Park on a Sunday afternoon from 13:00 to 17:00. If you're on Serpentine Road and would like to learn look out for the skaters in red t-shirts with a big "+" on the back and ask to be shown how to stop.
